pocket protector for the 21st century

a lab mate posed an interesting question to me. it used to be that wearing a pocket protector was the epitome of geekiness. however, while that symbol is certainly still a part of the culture, you don’t really see that many people actually wearing pocket protectors in earnest anymore. what, he asked, would be the modern equivalent, the pocket protector for the 21st century?

I paused for a moment, considered the question, then answered: the plastic cell phone belt clip.

no offense to those of you who may use such equipment, but what other modern worn accessory meant to carry, protect, and make constantly handy devices valuable to a geek screams geekiness more than a cell phone belt clip? suggestions?

  • I'd have to vote against the belt clip because of its prevalence in the business world. Businessmen (and women) are usually not the geekiest members of society, but almost always have the belt clip.

As for a better symbol, I'm not sure. Maybe the ratio of height pants are hiked up to age is a good indicator. It is taken for granted that the elderly wear their pants around their armpits, but for those of the younger generations, high pants indicates the social ineptitude associated with geeks.

  • perhaps your interactions with the business domain have differed from mine. in my experience, there are plenty of business people who wear the belt clip, but they are not exactly the hippest business people out there. while the belt clip may be more accepted in the business community, I think it's still a slightly higher degree of geekiness than those without one.
